December 2010 Of course there is something magical about this season – the lights, the music, the food, the connections with family and friends. The stretch between Thanksgiving and Christmas can be frantic, frustrating, even forlorn, yet somehow bright glimmers still manage to break through.
Part of what we try to do here at Memorial UCC during this season is provide some grounding in the underlying meaning of this time. It’s not about shopping, of course, even though shopping can be one way we express love to those we care about. It’s not about gala concerts, although I know for me that music well done can transport me to another dimension. It’s not about miles traveled, cookies baked, parties attended.
Those all help fight the darkness that pervades this time of year. It’s that very darkness that becomes a symbol for the moment that we are heading towards – a celebration of God’s light breaking into that darkness, reconnecting humanity with God and offering us hope for a future based on that connection with God.
We hope that our Sunday mornings and our Wednesday evenings and our Longest Night and our resources on our web site and in church all help you stand apart from the swirling activity around you and catch a glimpse of that light. We hope that when we sing of our longing for the miracle of Christmas, we can feel within ourselves the chance that this world can be a better place in the year ahead.
