| Council minutes April 14, 2009 |
|
Present: Jon Boldebuck, Kristin Gorton, Phil Haslanger, John Hilliard, Kelly Jetzer, Michael Magness, Wendy Proctor, Ron Reichert, Shirley Robbins, Sonjia Short, Keith Von Der Heide. Absent: Barb Gallogly-Turner Phil led in prayer. It was moved by Sonjia and seconded by Wendy to accept the minutes of the March 2009 meeting as presented. Motion carried. Pastors' Reports Phil: Attendance on Easter Sunday, total of two services: 200. Discussion of why it was much less on Palm Sunday than Easter. This is not untypical as families may have been away on vacation due to Spring Break for their kids. ---Noted various events - Rededication next Sunday, April 19; SWWA spring meeting May 3 (focus on environment); Conference Annual Meeting in June. ---Confirmation Class report - they attended a Shabbat service and served a meal at The Crossing; their Back Bay trip is somewhat uncertain (looking for chaperones) ---Report on our Website and what pages have been the most popular. ---Phil will be in Arizona visiting his son next week but will not miss a Sunday. Kristin: Described the Amazing Grace project coming up, two teams, they hope to keep the trophy. ---She will meet with the Confirmation Class in Phil's absence and plans to have them help with the Peace Pole. ---She will be a delegate from Wisconsin to the General Synod in June. Since she and Phil will both be gone Sunday, June 28th, Lisa Schoenwetter will conduct the service and preach. Financial Report Keith and John: We are OK with Pledges compared to last year, even less negative, but may need to become concerned soon. The Evening of Music may bring in some funds in a first-time free-will offering. The Garage Sale is coming up, and the Silent Auction is always a good fundraiser. Seven children are going to camp, with half the cost paid by Ahrnsbrak Fund Camperships. Ways are being sought to add to the Ahrnsbrak Family Fund, which runs out by mid-month with requests for housing assistance. Could special offerings be taken? Our Park Bank loan cannot be paid off this spring as had been hoped. There are unfulfilled pledges to the Building Fund, in this hard economic time. We are, however, receiving contributions to the new Debt Reduction Fund. It was moved by Sonjia that this report be accepted; seconded by Kelly and carried. Committee Reports TRUSTEES (Keith and John): They are looking for sources of funding for the Associate Pastor in 2010. Phil described the serious trouble with our computers last week. Jonathan Winger of DANEnet will be on call from now on. ADULT PROGRAMMING (Michael): The Easter breakfast went well, with plenty of food and volunteers, fewer eaters than hoped for. It may be well to do a breakfast at some other time than Easter, when so many families are going "out" or to relatives for dinner. The Garage Sale is coming up April 24. Game Night was fun, more families to participate are hoped for, still working on kids' activities. MEMBERSHIP (Wendy): Fitchburg Days plans coming along well. Looking at possibilities for a new Church Directory, checking out vendors; various suggestions were made. On May 3, Wendy is hosting a new-member reception at her home, 6:30 p.m. Council invited. OUTREACH (Phil): Discussing focusing Second Mile funds in three areas, $500 to each: Allied Drive projects, Leopold School and neighborhood, and disabilities (mental and physical) - plus an "odds and ends" category. They will also oversee the Housing and Hope project. WORSHIP (Sonjia): Suggestion - a greeter at the new side door off the parking lot for people entering services that way. CHILDREN'S PROGRAMMING (Kelly): The Heifer Project brought in $550. Pennies for Peace will continue indefinitely. They are preparing for Vacation Bible School. Church School picnic, May 31. Some of these reports may be seen in detail on the bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall. Old Business Ron has lined up the 5-year Strategic Plan Task Force: Chair, Sue Webb; Janine Bessemer, Bill Jetzer, Jess Lathrop , Cheryl Porior-Mayhew, Ron Reichert, and Pastor Phil. For the Associate Pastor Search Committee: Wendy Proctor will be Chair and Pastor Phil will be a member, other members still to be finalized. Wendy said the committee should meet every two weeks for a while. New Business ---For the search for a new Custodian, a job description is needed. Phil will get details from Roman Holewinski, the current Custodian. Ron will ask Gary Johnson, Trustees Chair, to supervise hiring the Custodian, opening the position to the Congregation. ---Question: to what degree should Phil decide for the Congregation whether MUCC will or will not agree to be a joint sponsor of a project or program? He receives requests for this. ---Additional May events: On the first Sunday, a rabbi will preach in our church! Rabbi Renee Bauer, on immigration issues. On the second Sunday, Jeff Puhlmann-Becker will speak, and he has never been here. He is Director of Pilgrim Center. ---Note for all who use the church: For the sprinkler system to be effective, all interior doors should be shut when the last person leaves. All exterior doors should be checked to be sure they are locked. Closed exterior doors allow the security system to work, but if the door is not locked, someone may still be able to walk in. Be sure to turn off all lights once leaving a room. However, some lights are on automatic sensors. Meeting adjourned. NEXT MEETING May 12, 6:45 p.m. Shirley Robbins, Recording Secretary |
