Council minutes Sept. 8, 2009
Present: Jon Boldebuck, Barb Gallogly, Phil Haslanger, John Hilliard, Kelly Jetzer, Michael Magness, Wendy Proctor, Ron Reichert, Shirley Robbins, Sonjia Short, Keith Von Der Heide, Kristin Gorton.

Meeting opened with a prayer for guidance.

Sonjia chaired the meeting temporarily; Ron was delayed. It was moved by Michael and seconded by Keith to approve the August minutes. Motion carried.

Pastor's Report (Phil):
---The Israel trip is now scheduled for late October.
---Two Inquirers' classes will be held, with 20 people invited. Phil predicts probably 5 or 6 will join by the end of the year.

Financial Report (Keith): --- We will pay off the Park Bank building loan this month. The Ahrnsbrak Fund is still owed $193,635 for the building loan.
---Pledges are over $10,000 below budget; the Trustees will send out a general mailing about our financial situation.
---It was moved by Michael and seconded by Barb to approve this report. Motion carried.

Committee Reports
Trustees (John): The Stewardship Committee has begun meeting; Commitment Sunday will be November 15.
Committees will receive budget work-sheets in their boxes.

Adult Programming (Mike): Planning is underway for the Auction and Cookout. Donations are scarce so far. Among the suggestions from the Council
are to pitch the Auction on Sunday, send the donation form by e-mail (Mike will do), ask for donations from local businesses.
The church picnic formerly planned for the Cosgroves' place, will be re-scheduled.

Children's Programming (Kelly): Rally Sunday coming up. Some new teachers for Church School. Under discussion is possibly not having the one-room
schoolhouse for kids on communion Sunday. Some parents fear that their kids will not learn to sit quietly in church. Suggestion – survey the parents on this.

Membership (Wendy): The photo directory is scheduled and an e-mail will be sent out asking folks to make their appointments.

Outreach (Barb): Susan Corrado, Allied Drive Parish Nurse, spoke to the committee recently, explaining the neighborhood's needs.
The committee is also exploring other issues and opportunities to serve in the Fitchburg neighborhood.

Worship (Sonjia): Will shortly decorate for Rally Day and make other plans for Fall.

Building and Grounds (Jon): Changes and repairs are needed to the sprinkler system; these were discussed. The parking lot resurfacing has needed a little more work.

Old Business
---Adjustment to Council terms to restore the proper sequence of terms will be decided at the December meeting.
---The Strategic Planning Committee will soon meet to discuss changes in Sunday morning scheduling, encouraging long-term giving, and how big we want to be.
---Associate Pastor Search Committee (Wendy) - narrowed the search to two candidates so excellent that it will be hard to make a choice. The committee will hear them preach, interview them, then choose one to presented to the Council and congregation. A trial sermon is scheduled for October 25, so the Council must schedule a congregational meeting for that day, with two weeks notice. It was decided that this notice will be given in the October Newsletter.

New Business
---It was moved by Michael and seconded by Kelly that a congregational meeting shall be called for the purpose of calling an Associate Pastor. This meeting will be after the church service on October 25. Motion carried. Much appreciation was expressed for Wendy's work, and she in turn praised her excellent committee.
---A Policies Task Force will be established after the Strategic Planning and Search Committees have finished their work.
---People need to be encouraged to return their Time and Talent Sheets.
---The Constitution Committee needs to be reactivated, to review our church constitution and propose any necessary changes.
---Kristen joined us after attending other meetings.
CROP Walk is coming up, with sign-up available, also a way to contribute via a link on our website.
She did a service at the UCC church in Darlington, whose pastor is her mentor.
She also spent a Sunday at the McFarland UCC, a church also giving her support in her journey to ordination.

Meeting adjourned. Next: October 13, 6:45 p.m.

Shirley Robbins, Recording Secretary
