Council minutes Oct. 13, 2009
Present: Jon Boldebuck, Barb Gallogly-Turner, Kristin Gorton, Phil Haslanger, John Hilliard, Kelly Jetzer, Wendy Proctor, Ron Reichert, Shirley Robbins, Sonjia Short, Keith Von Der Heide. Absent: Michael Magness.

Pastors' Reports
Phil: ---MUCC is hosting a Lake Edge UCC funeral tomorrow because Lake Edge has no heat, furnace being repaired.
---35 people are participating in several "The Faith Club" book discussions.
---Donna Mullaly is amalgamating the Time and Talent sheets.
---This Sunday two new members will join us: Steve and Nancy Arnold. Six more people are considering joining. Phil has sent letters to non-active members to see whether they still want to be considered members. Four have responded that they do not.
---Phil will be on the latest Israel trip October 26 to November 7.
Kristin: She has had a "spirit-filled" month of pastoral activity: deaths and funerals of an elderly church member and a still-born baby, with pastoral care for the two families; planning and leading the World Communion Sunday services, and taking communion to some people in their homes; a member's surgery. She has felt well-supported by our church family. CROP walk is coming up, and possibly a Corn Maze excursion for the youth.

Financial Reports:
Keith: MUCC has received an annuity from Leone Babler's estate, a sum of over $12,800, which has been put in the non-designated memorial fund pending a decision as to where to put it permanently.
John: We are still behind in income but the trend is toward catching up. Individual status letters will go out in December.
The Silent Auction brought in about $3,500; together with other Special Events income, the total from Special Events should exceed budgeted projection.
Moved by Sonjia and seconded by Barb to accept these reports. Motion carried.

Search Committee Report (Wendy): She distributed copies of the letter to the congregation and bio of the recommended candidate – Rev. Leah Lonsburgy. She described the Committee's experience, saying it was a very hard choice between the two final candidates, but the choice was unanimous. It was moved by Barb and seconded by Jon that the Council forward the committee’s recommendation to the congregation for a vote at a special Oct. 25 congregational meeting. The motion carried.
Thanks, appreciation, and praise were expressed to Wendy and the Search Committee.

Committee Reports:
Trustees -- Matt Sundell (assisted by his wife, Tracy, and their son, Joe) has been hired as Custodian.
Adult Programming -- Jean L. suggests having the silent auction lists up for two Sundays prior to the actual auction date next year, to allow more time for bidding.
Children's Programming -- Children from 4th grade up will be encouraged to stay in the church service on communion Sundays. One more teacher is needed for the 6th-8th grade class. A substitute Nursery caretaker is needed for a few Sundays when Courtney will be absent.
Membership -- Directory appointments are nearly all filled. It was decided not to "do coffee" at local football games this year (but we were missed!).
Outreach -- We will have a Road Home presentation next Sunday.
Worship -- The bushel basket for donated food during the Stewardship period already has food in it. Decorating for Advent soon.
Building and Grounds -- Three lights in the Fellowship Hall are out; it may be that being on a dimmer wears them out faster. The sprinkler system is fixed. The
committee will discuss replacing the water heater, which is over 20 years old. Leone had suggested two memorial trees (for her and Art), to be placed near Susie's tree, and to be done soon so that Art can enjoy seeing them. This project is underway.

Old Business
---The Constitution Committee has gone through Articles I through VI, making minor changes.
---The Strategic Planning Committee will meet soon with Gary Johnson (representing Trustees). They have met with staff and committee leaders concerning the Sunday morning schedule.

New Business
---The Fitchburg Amateur Radio Club wants to meet here for their annual "swap meet". Council said that a church representative should be on hand for this.
---MUCC advertising: Phil suggested ways in which we can spend less and use more effective print advertising: Yellow Pages, less listing; a color ad in each quarterly Fitchburg Guide (more targeted than the Yellow Pages); fewer lines in the Saturday Wisconsin State Journal church page listing (people can go to our website for further information); omit the Christmas ad in Wisconsin State Journal; increase our presence in the Oregon paper.
---Question: how can people who attend the early service vote on the Associate Pastor, since the congregational meeting is held after the late service? Council concluded that, same as the last such vote, the "8:30 People" will have to stay, or come back, in order to vote. They can write letters of support or objection, but these will not be absentee ballots.
---Ron and Phil will attend a state-wide meeting at the Conference Office concerning how a church appears to visitors, how it impresses them.

Meeting adjourned. Next: November 10, 6:45 p.m.
Shirley Robbins, Recording Secretary
