Dec. 2009 - Constitution and Budget Moving Forward
A proposed update of Memorial’s Constitution and a draft of the 2010 budget dominated the Council meeting on Dec. 15.  Both items will come before the members of the congregation at the annual meeting on Sunday, Jan. 24.

The proposed changes in the Constitution came from a task force composed of Council President Ron Reichert, Financial Secretary John Hilliard and Pastor Phil. They were given the task of reviewing the language of the Constitution amended in 2001 and recommending changes that will keep the document current with our needs in the years ahead. The Council will revisit the changes at its Jan. 5 meeting and then send the proposed revisions to the membership. There will be a chance to discuss them between and after services on the morning of Jan. 17.

Gary Johnson, chair of the trustees, presented their proposed 2010 budget, based on current estimates of pledging and expenses. The particular challenge in 2010 is including the salary for a half-time associate pastor after not having that position for a year and increasing the total repayment amount to the Ahrnsbrak Fund for the construction of the Youth Wing. The Council will take another look at the proposed budget at its Jan. 5 meeting and then will send it on to the congregation for consideration at the Jan. 24 annual meeting. As with the constitution revisions, there will be a chance for questions and discussion between and after services on the morning of Jan. 17.

In other business, the Council heard from the Building and Grounds Committee that a new water heater has been installed, replacing the original water heater from 21 years ago. Barb Gallogly-Turner told the Council that she will not be seeking another term in January, so the Nominating Committee will have to find at least one new person to be on the slate of candidates. Wendy Proctor, Jon Boldebuck and Michael Magness will be seeking re-election.

The Council also expressed its thanks to Pastor Kristin for her work over the past year as a pastoral intern.

The next Council meeting will be at 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 5, in Fellowship Hall.
