Council Minutes May 11, 2010
Present:  Jon Boldebuck, Phil Haslanger, John Hilliard, Kelly Jetzer, Leah
Lonsbury, Michael Magness,  Rick Orton, Wendy Proctor, Ron Reichert, Shirley
Robbins, Sonjia Short, Keith VonDerHeide.

Pastor Phil opened the meeting with prayer.
This was followed by a Council rendition of "Happy Birthday" to Phil.

Moved by Sonjia and seconded by Wendy to approve the April minutes as written.  Motion carried.

Pastors' Reports
Phil: --April was very busy at MUCC.  Housing and Hope fund stands at $1,388 and rising (the goal was $1000);  the box of HEALTH items is nearly full.
Phil attended the Fitchburg Chamber of Commerce "first Tuesday" breakfast and reported that MUCC can be involved in choosing books on spirituality for the new Library.  We can also offer space for the Library's children's story hour.  These community connections are good.
Our High School and College grads will be honored on May 23.  Phil may be away a lot in the near future, attending his daughter's college graduation and helping her move to a job in Steamboat Springs, CO.  We will not be without preachers; we have Leah and Jacy.
Phil hopes more people will be willing to "like" our Facebook page.

**Expanding our reach to families**:  Phil reviewed a handout detailing this plan he and Leah have been working on.  Main points:
                        * Enhance our Nursery program with a second child-care person and additional times when care is offered.  Leah and Children’s Programming are working on hiring this  person, and for now the position can be funded from the Endowment Fund.
--Develop a Wednesday evening program which could bring out people not now connected with MUCC, especially families.  This could be funded by the Ahrnsbrak New Initiatives Fund as  pilot program to be evaluated after 18 months.
--Develop a once-a-month Friday evening family night, with a variety of programs and activities.

Leah:--Planning youth activities, which are always open to all youth, including friends.  Because kids are so busy, the Chicago trip may be in August rather than June.  She is enjoying "dreaming" about the "Expanding our reach to families" possibilities.

Financial Report:  John noted that we are running a bit in the red, even beyond the planned $11,000 deficit. Council agreed we should think about  ways to economize and also bring in more funds.  It was moved by Sonjia and seconded by Michael that the printed Financial Report  be accepted.  Motion carried.

Committee Reports were received by e-mail.  Keith added for the
Trustees:  The received a request on behalf of Sister House of $1000, and
want approval by the Council of their recommended gift of $500 or another amount, from the Endowment Fund.  Moved by Wendy and seconded by Kelly to give $500 now and consider a later gift if money is still available in the Fund.  Motion carried.
Sonjia asked for a volunteer to prepare communion on July 4.  Rick volunteered.  Michael volunteered for June 6.
The Trustees have approved plans to finance the added child-care worker.

Old Business
---The Sunday Morning Advisory Committee:  Council discussed the committee's
recommendations and offered some additional ideas.  It was moved by Rick and
seconded by Sonjia that the Council accept Scenario 3 as printed in the
committee's document of March 11, 2010.  Motion carried, with one "no" and
one "abstain".  Moved by Michael and seconded by Rick that Council send this
decision to a combined Worship and Children's Programming Committee, plus
the Pastors, to form an implementation plan to be brought to the Council's
June 8 meeting.

---Ron briefly described the changes in the Wisconsin UCC organizational
structure which affect us:  Association territory will remain the same, but
there will be one minister on that level for each two Associations (southern Wisconsin
and northern Wisconsin).  There will be no Association offices.  These changes are budget necessities.  Now churches will have to plan how to work together.

---Sonjia moved that the Council approve Jacy Boldebuck and Ellen Reuter as our delegates to the Wisconsin Conference annual meeting in June. Motion seconded  by Michael and carried.  At this meeting, the Conference will direct that the above plan for changes be implemented on July 1, 2011.

Meeting adjourned.

Next meeting:  June 8 at 6:45 p.m..

Shirley Robbins, Recording Secretary
