Council Minutes, August 10, 2010
Present:  Phil Haslanger, Kelly Jetzer, Leah Lonsbury, Rick Orton, Kate Proctor, Shirley Robbins, Sonjia Short, Keith Von Der Heide.

Since a quorum of Council members was not present, no official action was taken during this meeting, but several items were discussed. The meeting was called to order by Vice-President Sonjia.  Phil read some words of Walter Brueggemann on God's call to us and our mixed response. Minutes of the June meeting were accepted.

Pastors' Reports
---Phil:  Things have been moving only a little more slowly during the summer.  Visitors have been re-visiting.
Phil had a good conference with our custodian, Matt Sundell; there is general satisfaction with his work.
Phil suggests that we consider changes to our newsletter. The P.O. forbids stapling in the corner as we have been doing. Would a booklet form work?  We send out 236 newsletters, and among those recipients are only about 30 members who do not have e-mail. Could we e-mail the majority of the newsletters? An ad hoc committee will develop a new plan for the newsletter, including Phil, Leah, some from the Membership Committee, the Web Team, and others interested.

---Leah:  The Youth Summer Blast was great, did a fine paint job on the clinic building and had time for fruitful conversations.  She will put together a calendar for youth activities as school starts.
Leah gave out a draft plan for "The Way on Wednesdays", including the over-all schedule and  details of activities and topics for the "paths".  She  noted that there are no age limits for participation.  Some of the goals for this program:   To serve the needs and interests of the MUCC congregation;  and to attract people from the community by serving their needs also.  There is a New Initiatives grant to get this program started,
and ways of covering the costs will be developed as time goes on.  Plans for publicity are in the works.  All are welcome to participate in the planning.

Financial Report  (Keith)
Keith noted that there has been a good response to the letter sent to the congregation concerning the financial situation.  Some are catching up on their pledges,  some are increasing their giving.  We received the "unclaimed property" noted at the last meeting.  It turned out to be a bond somehow "lost in the shuffle" at the bank.  We received $1,519.25.  Keith's report was accepted.

Committee Reports
---Trustees (Keith):  Recommended approval of a request from Carol Williams
for Porchlight: $1,500. Deferred to next meeting when there is a quorum.
Handed out a draft chart showing who approves expenditures of funds, and amounts needing approval.
---Children's Programming (Kelly):  Vacation Bible School was a great success.   Teachers are needed for Sunday School, and also helpers for the Enrichment Session for
kids in the new Sunday schedule.  Rally Day is Sep. 12, with a sloppy joe lunch and a
concert by Stuart Stotts.
---Building and Grounds:  The property line/tree situation is being dealt with.

Old Business
The Adult Education Committee (Jacy, Janine, Phil) is making plans for
the fall adult education sessions, with several good ideas.

New Business
---Policies and Procedures:  Kate completed her compilation of existing policies and procedures, searching past Council minutes and other sources. The Council thanked her heartily for this work!  Kate recommends official action declaring all previous "by-laws" cancelled.  In a brief review of  the report, the Council noted several items to consider changing or omitting, and some to add, or define more clearly.  The personnel section
will now be developed.
---The Silent Auction has already been announced, will begin a week earlier. It was suggested that it end at a certain time (12:30?) on the day of the auction, items can be hyped during the meal, and people can pay for and collect their items later rather than immediately after the auction. Other ideas were suggested.
---Information about a possible All-Church Retreat for Feb. 18-20 at Pilgrim
Center was presented  Council suggested that Phil take a straw poll to determine          interest in this in the congregation.

Meeting adjourned (without a motion, since we did not have a quorum).
