March 2010 Several new resources are available in the church library for grandparents or parents to borrow and share with their children when health changes or death occurs in the family. You can find these in the ìHealth and Grievingî section. What's Happening to Grandpa? by Maria Shriver "A compassionate story that artfully helps parents demystify Alzheimerís disease. Maria Shriver has written a deeply meaningful book that empowers children and dispels their fear by answering their tough questions." Quote from Dr. Phil McGraw. When Someone You Love has Cancer - A Guide to Help Kids Cope by Alaric Lewis. Cancer is a confusing diagnosis that can be hard to understand when we are adults. For children there can be a greater amount of fear and confusion. This book helps kids begin to cope with what changes occur when cancer is present in the life of their family. Lifetimes - The Beautiful Way to Explain Death to Children by Bryan Mellonie and Robert Ingpen. Using simple words and beautiful illustrations, this book tells about beginnings and endings and living in between, using plants, animals and people. When Dinosaurs Die- A Guide to Understanding Death by Laurie Krasny Brown and Marc Brown. Explains in simple language the feelings people may have regarding the death of a loved one and the ways to honor the memory of someone who has died. Tear Soup - A Recipe For Healing After Loss by Pat Schwiebert and Chuck DeKlyen. When making soup many of us improvise as we go hoping that the blended creation satisfies our hunger and soothes what may be hurting us. This is a story about Grandy who has suffered a loss and now is making a batch of ìtear soup.î Her soup brings her comfort and ultimately helps to fill the void in her life that was created by her loss. When a Pet Dies by Fred Rogers. This sensitive and sensible first book about death helps parents to explore with their child feelings they will experience when they lose a pet. Helping children understand life changes that may occur can be overwhelming and difficult especially if you are also overwhelmed. If you have any concerns that these books don't address or would like to talk with me, please call and we can set up a time to get together. |
