parish nurse March hosts National Poison Prevention Week “…Choose life so that you and your descendants may live…” Deuteronomy 30:19 In the U.S. nearly 2.5 million people call poison centers, with more than half of that number involving children under the age of 5. Poisons are found everywhere- in your home, garage, yard, even your purse or diaper bag. The following are suggestions for keeping children safe from poisons that are found in all homes: * Store all medicines and household products in locked cabinets, out of the reach of children. * Keep all products and medicines in their original containers with original labels, never in food or beverage containers. * Always read the label before using any product. * Refer to medicines as medicine, never call it candy. . * Safely dispose of all outdated and unneeded medicines. * Close containers immediately after use and place in a locked location. * Place “Mr. Yuk” stickers on all household products and medicines. And teach your child that “Mr. Yuk” means, “Stay away”. * Keep all household plants out of the reach of infants and toddlers (many are poisonous). If your child or grandchild eats/drinks a poison, separate the child from the poison and immediately call the toll free nationwide poison control center number: 1-800-222-1222. This number will direct your call to Wisconsin Poison Center a program of Children’s Hospital of WI. Post the Poison Center phone number near your telephones. The American Association of Poison Controls Center and the American Academy of Pediatrics no longer recommend using Syrup of Ipecac. Mr. Yuk stickers may be ordered and other helpful information can be found at www.wisconsinpoison.org |
