Conversations with Older Drivers

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven…” Ecclesiastes 3:1

According to statistics most older drivers are safe drivers, using their seat belt while driving, and receiving few citations.  However, skills necessary for safe driving- vision, reflexes, flexibility, and hearing begin to deteriorate around age 55, with even greater loss after 75.  And as age increases for an individual so does the risk of accidents and injuries.  Questioning whether a loved one “should” be driving is an emotional topic that many families face.

Memorial UCC Health Ministry committee along with myself and the help of member Sue Webb, have made available a booklet called: “We Need To Talk…Family Conversations with Older Drivers”

This booklet from “The Hartford” looks at topics such as:  When is it a good time to begin talking about driving habits?  How do you prepare for a conversation and what circumstances create opportunities for conversations about driving?

Included is a list of driving behavior warning signs to help family members decide if the less serious issues could be changed.  A rich list of resources found at the back, will help guide you and your loved one.

I believe that this helpful booklet will be a valuable resource for your family.  You can find it by the Health Ministries bulletin board in the narthex.  Remember you are welcome to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
