Adult education

Expanding Horizons on Sunday mornings

Who were some of those characters in the Bible and what do they have to say to us?

What does it mean to play and live joyfully?

How can people in the Madison area help folks who are homeless find more stability?

These are just a few of the topics weíll be exploring on Sunday morning starting Sept. 12 when we inaugurate our adult education time between 9:10 and 9:50 a.m. (Adult ed does not mean this is only for people 18 and over - we encourage teens to join in as well.)

We will open on Sept. 12 and 19 with a look at the Bible as the book of our family stories. Ellen Reuter will lead those sessions.

And then on Sept. 26, Steve Schooler from Porchlight will tell his story of call to serve the homeless and he'll describe the work of Porchlight.

And while the adults are exploring these topics, we'll have an enrichment program going on for our children at the same time. This is not in place of Sunday school ñ that will still happen during the 10 a.m. worship service. But this will give parents a chance to participate in adult ed while their children are learning in fun ways.

The Children's Programming Committee is planning to focus on a different Bible story each month during this time. Each week, there will be a different way to share the story. One week it may be through music, another week through crafts, still another week with a skit and maybe another week with a service project.  The Bible story for September will be about creation.

Sin Boldly (or at least early)

There has been a book group gathering about once a month on Friday mornings (that would be at 7 a.m. until 8:30 a.m.). The next book we will be reading is Sin Boldly: A Field Guide for Grace by Cathleen Falsani. If you’d like to join in, let Pastor Phil know. The next gathering will be on Sept. 24 at Barriques on PD.

Scripture and Scones - Wednesdays from 8 to 9 a.m.

Every week, a group of folks gather in our library to look at the Scripture texts that will be used the following Sunday. These are often very lively discussions -- and the baked goods and coffee aren't bad either. Anyone is welcome to join at any time.
