 Memorial United Church of Christ

The Choral Director will assist the Music Director of Memorial United Church of Christ (MUCC) in creating experiences of music to encounter the sacred and the holy in worship. This person will collaborate with the Pastors and Director of Music to provide music selection and choral direction. This is a salaried quarter-time position based on approximately 10 hours per week.

Responsibilities:

Direct the vocal choir, including the recruitment of members, selecting choral music, leading rehearsals, and conducting the choir at three worship services per month during the academic year. Also, arrange for special music as appropriate for special services and events (including but not limited to Longest Night, Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter, Pentecost, and some services during the summer).

Support the volunteers that direct the hand bell choir, orchestra, youth music programs and other music groups that may be created.

Assist the Music Director to help coordinate the scheduling of music groups for worship services.

In collaboration with the Music Director, organize special music with soloists, ensembles, or guests during the year, especially during summer worship times.

Provide opportunities for the choir and other musicians to reflect on the theological or spiritual meaning of the music and its role in worship. This could also be extended to the congregation at times.

Coach and train choir soloists, as needed.

Arrange for substitutes when unable to conduct the choir.

Conduct other musical groups on a fill-in basis.

Participate in choral continuing education opportunities as offered, ideally once a year. Monetary support shall be provided within budgetary limits.

Communicate information for bulletins and newsletters.

Read and comply with the requirements in the Employee Handbook.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a music major or minor.
  • Equivalent experience and knowledge may be substituted for this.
  • Experience with or openness to working in a church setting.
  • Choral directing experience.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of the diversity of appropriate music for worship.
  • Basic vocal ability.
  • Effective organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and creatively with pastors, staff, musicians, choir members, and the congregation.
  • Ability to lead a group of volunteers with varying levels of musical training.
