Join Our Team: Youth Faith Development Leader

The Youth Faith Development Leader directs the creation, recruitment, nurturing and
administration of youth faith development programs at Memorial United Church of Christ,
specifically the Nursery, Sunday School, and Youth Group. This is a salaried one-third-time
position based on an average of 10-hours per week with additional flex-time per year available
for continuing education, meetings and special youth programs and events.

Hours: 10-12 hours/week. Availability to work most Sunday mornings, as well as some evenings depending upon the program and meeting schedules and on occasion, travel for special events. A typical work week would be one day in the office (4 hours), Sunday morning service and Sunday School set
up/facilitation/clean up (3 hours) and at-home prep time (3 hours).

Salary: $25-$27 / hour

Responsibilities:
-Collaboratively work with the Youth Programming Team with input from the Pastor(s) to select
curriculum and develop Christian education programs for youth. Attend regularly scheduled staff
meetings with pastor(s) and church administrator to coordinate.
-Work with pastors and Youth Programming Team to review and implement curriculum.
-Schedule, coordinate, recruit, and train volunteers for Sunday School; teach Sunday School; and
promote a foundation for life-long faith and service.
-Develop, schedule, and coordinate Youth Group events with support from the Pastors, parents
and Youth Programing Team, such as youth trips, sleepovers, movie nights, interfaith field trips,
escape rooms, bowling, community service projects, and roller skating and recruit adult
chaperones and volunteers, as needed.
-Coordinate with assistance from the Office Administrator the Nursery staffing schedule in
accordance with the Safe Conduct Policies and Procedures and work with the pastor(s) to
coordinate Nursery care when special services happen (such as Christmas Eve, congregational
meetings, etc).
-Verify that the Safe Conduct policies and procedures are being implemented and coordinate with
the Church Administrator to verify that background checks have been performed for all
volunteers and staff having contact with youth.
-Coordinate with the Youth Programming Team Council liaison to present monthly reports to
Council and any recommendations from the Youth Programming Team that may require Council
action.
-Assist the Church Administrator in keeping the youth faith development web pages current.
-Update the MUCC Faith Development Facebook page and share with other MUCC Facebook
pages.
-Keep the congregation informed of youth faith development programs and events by making
announcements during worship services and periodically providing articles/information on faith
development programs for the bulletin, eNews, and digital announcements.

-Assist the Youth Programming Team chairperson in scheduling and setting agendas for in-person
and online meetings. Meetings to happen at least quarterly.
-Assist pastors to actively engage youth in worship and life of the congregations (e.g.,
ushers, readers, singing, percussion, and Memorials LGBTQIA and Eco-Justice
covenants, etc).
-Assist pastors to strengthen Memorial’s youth engagement with the wider Church, such
as other UCC churches, other denominations, UCC camps, Great Lakes Regional Youth
Event and National UCC events.)
-Read and comply with the requirements of the Employee Handbook.
-Participate in continuing education opportunities as offered, ideally once a year. Monetary
support will be provided within budgetary limits.

Qualifications:
-Experience in coordinating schedules and volunteers, following through on assignments, and
self-initiator in tasks.
-Experience working with youth faith development, spiritual formation and/or education for
youth.
-An ability to encourage and inspire people to discover their gifts and find ways to use them in
youth faith development programs.
-Exemplary interpersonal skills, affection for people, and the ability to work collaboratively and
cooperatively in a diverse environment.
-Demonstrated leadership ability and a willingness to make decisions as appropriate when
consensus cannot be achieved.
-Excellent written and oral communication skills.
-Proficiency with technology, especially social media.
-An understanding of the personal and professional boundaries required for a position that
involves working with youth and congregation members.
-Understanding of and a willingness to embrace the mission and principles of the United Church
of Christ. Church membership is not required.

-Respect for ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural diversity, including varied sexual orientations
and gender identities as reflected in Memorial’s status as an Open and Affirming congregation
and a respect for diversity or religious viewpoints in our midst.

Desired but not required: formal education and/or work experience in religious studies, youth
education, or congregational ministry. Experience or training in using music, art, or similar
activities as part of an education process. Past supervisory or program management experience.
